Amazon, small business owners looking to hire workers throughout Stockton
Retail giant announced plans to hire 2,200 people
Amazon is expanding its operations into Stockton with a new facility, and it plans to hire 2,200 people to help run the center. The new building, which will be located at 6001 South Austin Road, will have an opening date set for the end of October. “With Amazon, we really like to be focused on taking care of the folks that work for us. Starting wages are at $17.55 an hour,” Nicole Bilich, an Amazon human resources manager said, “We’re really looking to partner with our community to make a difference, not just be the big guy that moved in. We really want to be a part of the community that we live in.”As Amazon continues to search for workers, so, too, do small business owners throughout Stockton. During the breakfast rush in Stockton, a flurry of customers are seated at Sam’s Cafe, as an albeit small but friendly staff jot down, and deliver orders. “I’m doing ok, I’m doing the same thing, the business, I don’t have to worry, never worry about the business,” Sam Ou-Yang, the owner of Sam’s Cafe said.Ou-Yang said he had to reframe his business model in order to reopen this past March. The business had been closed for a year due to the pandemic. Prior to the lockdown, he offered American and Chinese food and had been open Tuesday to Sunday. He’s since dropped Chinese food and only offers American at this time. Staffing shortages forced him to refocus his business model, limiting hours and the menu, as he remains in need of at least three more staff members to fully reopen his kitchen. But as a small business, he can’t afford to pay more than minimum wage, a similar predicament many business owners in Stockton have faced: with many a window, advertising the need for more workers. Even though workers are needed just about everywhere, Ou-Yang said he’s not worried. Sam’s Cafe has been in Stockton for 26 years, and with his steady stream of regulars, whom he also considers friends, he’s ready for the long haul. “I feel OK. The business is always here; the customers are always here. They support me,” Ou-Yang said.
